Easy Access Garden Design, Porchester, Hampshire
The Project
Client: Mr and Mrs B, Porchester, Hampshire
Designer: Paul Bentley MSGD
Garden Condition:
- Overgrown with shrubs and trees.
- Builders' mess everywhere.
- Concrete paving and bricks throughout the garden.
Client Brief:
- Due to mobility constraints, the client required a garden on one level for easy access by wheelchairs.
- A timber building to be erected for storage and summerhouse.
- Low maintenance with artificial grass.
Weather conditions and duration of works:
Started out sunny, however, the rain soon set in and stayed throughout most of the project. Soil was loamy and well drained.
Suppliers:
- Decking, associated timbers and fixings – A J Smith, Benfleet
- General building materials – Wolseley Centres and Covers, Chichester
- Waste disposal – Lift and Shift, Portsmouth
- Plants – Petworth Nurseries (Wholesale only)
Outcome:
- The garden was cleared and the larger conifers and overgrown shrubs removed.
- A timber decking feature was constructed, with easy access for the house and on one level throughout.
- The timber frame for the deck was extended to carry the summerhouse.
- The centre of the garden was raised up to the same level as the decking, ensuring no spoil, soil or materials came into contact with any timber.
- Planting areas were incorporated to give balance and harmony to the project.
- Astro turf was laid for a no maintenance lawn area and so access can be gained around the whole garden by wheelchairs.
- A new timber building was erected in the corner of the garden.
- A new timber fence was installed on the client’s boundary.
- The deck was coated with Liberon anti-slip solution.
- The project took 3.5 weeks to construct and the final cost was in the region of £8,500.
