Timber Decking, Whiteley, Hants

The Project

Client: Mr and Mrs A, Whiteley, Hants
Designer: Paul Bentley MSGD

Garden Condition:

  • This property is on a new estate and was left in typical builder fashion.
  • The area was left as soil with rubble etc and was full of weeds.
  • The garden faced due south so was predominantly sunny.
  • The garden rises sharply towards the rear.
  • The soil was clay in texture and poorly drained.

Client Brief:

The client wanted two separate seating areas in decking, water feature and lighting.

Weather conditions and duration of works:

Sunny, however, very cold.

Suppliers:

  • Decking and softwood for the sub frame - A J Smith and Son, Benfleet
  • Paving – Miles Stone, Southampton
  • Deck lights – A J Smith and Son, Benfleet
  • Water feature accessories – Fairwater Ltd, Ashington, and Fishtastic, Alton
  • General building materials – Wolseley Centres, Portsmouth
  • Plants – Big Plant and Aldingbourne Nurseries

Outcome:

Two IPE Brazilian Walnut hardwood decking levels were created with an upper level at the rear of the garden.

The main deck outside the rear access door created an ample seating area for entertaining and the upper level was large enough for a table with 4<6 chairs.

The two areas were connected with a path created out of Black Natural Indian Limestone and steps up on to a deck walkway, over a water feature / stream.

The water feature consists of a stainless steel letterbox, opening out of the face of the upper deck and creating a clean sheet of water dropping into the stream before running down towards the lower decking area. This creates an ambient sound of water without being intrusive. A bottom drain was fitted at the lower deck end of the stream, with a 100mm pipe running underground to a sunken balance tank. The balance tank houses the pump, a mains water top up system and a brominator (a bromine dispenser to keep the water crystal clear). The water is then pumped up to the chute built into the deck.

Stainless steel LED deck lights were installed in the upper deck and the risers of the steps and halogen spotlights illuminated the water feature and structural plants.

Planting was then installed as the last part of the project.
